How to Use Wasp Jet Long Reach Wasp Spray

When treating wasp nests, safety is a key priority – check out the safety tips below.

Always shake the can well before use. As the formulation uses carbon dioxide propellant to reduce flammability, it has different characteristics to a standard aerosol. When you spray Wasp Jet, its powerful jet lasts several seconds but then starts to lose power (this is normal). When that happens, stop spraying, wait 5 seconds and shake the can thoroughly. The power will be back to normal and you can continue spraying.

European Wasps

Extreme care needs to be taken when attempting to control European wasp nests (see safety tips below). The control technique is very much dependent on the location and size of the nest. A confident homeowner, wearing the correct safety equipment (see safety tips) can tackle small, exposed European wasp nests. Generally such nests are only around in spring when the nests are young. Coating the nest rapidly with insecticide, from a distance using PestXpert Wasp Jet Long Reach aerosol (which can spray up to 6 meters!), is a good option.

European or German wasp — EUROPEAN (GERMAN) WASP

However, when the nests get bigger (as summer approaches), they become enclosed in an outer layer of “paper” with only a single entrance. In such cases it is difficult and risky to try and treat with aerosol products, as you need to accurately spray through the small opening. For such nests and for wasp nests in the ground or other enclosed areas, it is recommended that you contact the local council or professional pest controller as specialised equipment will be required, to safely remove the nest.

Australian paper wasps / Asian paper wasp / Mud dauber wasps

Hold the can upright and target the nest, ideally with the wind coming from behind. Spray the nest with a 2-3 second burst in a sweeping motion, making sure all the wasps and nest are coated. This will ensure the wasps are immobilized immediately and don’t have time to escape or get alarmed. Back away to a safe distance until all the wasps are dead.

Once the wasps are dead you can knock down the nest and sweep up the bodies. The product may leave a temporary stain on brickwork / rendered finishes but this should disappear in a couple of hours as the product evaporates.

Expected Performance

A direct hit to an exposed wasp nest will immoblise the wasps within seconds, with many of the wasps falling to the ground. The wasps will be dead within minutes after which the nest can be removed and dead wasps swept up.

If there is the possibility of foraging wasps returning after treatment, the nest can be left in place until the following day – any wasps that land on the nest will pick up the insecticide and die.

Safety Tips

The PestXpert range has been specifically designed for use around homes, where there will be children and pets present. When used in accordance with the label, the products can be applied safely with minimal impact on the environment (see point 9 below). In fact, the professional quality packaging allows the products to be applied more safely that standard consumer products, as they can be applied more accurately with less chance of accidental contact with the insecticide.

Nevertheless, safety should always be the number one priority and so before carrying out a wasp treatment follow the these key steps

Read the label. Make sure you understand application instructions and safety information.
When to spray? The best time to deal with wasps is in the evening when all the wasps are back at the nest and they are generally less active.
Wear appropriate safety clothing. Wear protective clothing including long trousers and a long sleeved top. Wash hands, arms and face after use. For native paper wasps, ideally a bee net should be worn over the head, but if one is not available, a hat and goggles should be worn. For European wasps, fully safety equipment (bee net, thick overalls with sealed joins and thick gloves and boots) should be worn.
Prepare the treatment area. The area to be treated should be clear of obstacles. Do not stand on a ladder when spraying a nest and ensure you have a safe escape route to allow quick evacuation from the area in case the wasps become alarmed.
Keep pets and children clear during application and until the treatment is dried
Wind alert. Take into account any wind direction, as it can affect the accuracy of the spray and may cause the product to hit unintended targets. Ideally the wind should be coming from behind when spraying.
Where not to stand! Do not stand underneath the area to be sprayed and do not spray whilst standing on a ladder.
Electrical safety. Although the formulation has low electrical conductivity and should not short out well maintained electrical systems, care should be taken when spray near electrical areas and directly spraying electrical equipment should be avoided.
Fish and bee alert. Although PestXpert products are designed to have minimal impact on the environment, they will kill bees (as they are insects) and fish are also very sensitive to the insecticides used in PestXpert (and most other consumer products). To minimise bee deaths, avoid spraying flowers. To protect fish, cover fish tanks and ponds and avoid spraying or disposing of product into waterways

When is the best time to spray a wasp nest?

Can I spray a wasp nest near electrical equipment?

You should be very careful spraying near electrical boxes and cabling. The solvent in wasp sprays can damage plastics and many products have the potential to short electrical circuits. PestXpert Wasp Jet is a low conductivity formulation using a special solven and carbon dioxide as the propellent, which significantly reduce the risk of shorting electrical circuits. However, it is still recommended that care should be take to avoid spraying electrical areas directly.
